Geeking out over books has always been a favorite hobby of mine. Within the past year, though, I’ve begun to take up running. Reading may nourish my mind, but running nourishes my body.
July 4, 2012: Finished my first 10K! 6.2 miles in 1 hour, 13 mins. Not too shabby for my first run. One of my best friends and I trained intermittently for about 3 months for this run. I say intermittently because with our schedules, it was hard to coordinate running dates for training. I’d often find myself waking up at 6:45am on Saturday mornings to do a practice run before the heat really started to kick in.
October 27, 2012: I completed my second 10K with my cousin for her birthday. Best part: it was a themed run! The Awesome 80’s 5K/10K was held on a gorgeous autumn day. I channeled 80’s Workout Barbie: electric blue leggings, hot pink leg warmers and fingerless gloves, one shoulder sweatshirt, side ponytail. Time: 1 hour, 10 mins
November 11, 2012: I crossed one major thing off my bucket list with the completion of my very first HALF MARATHON! That’s 13.1 miles! The Silver Strand race benefits Headnorth, which helps to enhance the quality of life for folks with spinal-cord injuries, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps para-athletes the opportunity to live an active lifestyle through various physical fitness and competitive activities. This was quite the experience – the anxiety, the excitement, the pacing, and the endless running. Time: 2 hours, 36 mins.
