Confession: I did not want to like THOUGHTLESS. I did not want to get sucked in yet another love triangle. But I did like THOUGHTLESS, and I did get sucked in. The college setting is very different from the usual high school drama that comes with YA fiction. This book was also a lot – a LOT – steamier than other YA books. Kiera, our protagonist, follows her boyfriend Denny across the country when he lands a job in Seattle. The two of them end up sharing an apartment with Kellan Kyle, a local up-and-coming rock star, and Denny’s high school friend.
Because the book was told from Kiera’s POV, we got to see her back-and-forth, guilt-ridden self mismanage her relationships with Denny and Kellan. There were times when I wanted to scream at Kiera as if she was my friend justifying her questionable choices to me. Denny is that guy that we all dated at one time – the sweet man who is incredibly stable and calm. Kellan is that guy that we know we shouldn’t date but fantasize about anyway – rough, edgy, sexy as hell, with hints of vulnerability. We know that dating a Kellan would result in nothing but drama, but we can’t seem to help getting sucked right in. Stephens does an amazing job creating such chemistry between Kiera and Kellan. The espresso stand and the club scene had to be two of the steamiest scenes I’ve read.
Overall, if you enjoy reading a book palpating with steam, angst, and questionable decisions, then THOUGHTLESS is the book for you.
