If I Am Missing or Dead by Janine Latus

In the name of full disclosure, I was assigned to read this book for a domestic violence class I’m currently taking. A good book has the power to make you think, feel, and experience the story. How do I know this book is a keeper? A friend of mine that’s taking the class with me fainted during a particularly intense scene involving breast augmentation. When a book results in a visceral reaction from the reader – you know the author’s doing something right.

I appreciated the emphasis on the psychological and emotional abuse that the author experienced. From a professional perspective, Latus does a great job in describing the contradictions, ambivalence, and emotions that people in intimate partner violence experience. From a stylistic perspective, Latus creates an air of mystery with the retelling of Amy’s story.

Latus’s IF I AM MISSING OR DEAD: A SISTER’S STORY OF LOVE, MURDER, AND LIBERATION is a must-read. Do yourself a favor and buy it or borrow it.
